Society trips
Planning a society trip to England's Golf Coast
The Sefton coast between Southport and Formby has more championship links than anywhere else in England, with good-value parkland courses ten minutes inland around Ormskirk. It works as an away day from Manchester or Liverpool, or a two-day trip with a night in Southport.
Where to base yourselves
Stay in Southport
Royal Birkdale, Hillside, Southport & Ainsdale and Hesketh are all within about four miles of Lord Street, with plenty of hotels in the town.

Two links, one weekend
Hesketh and Southport & Ainsdale run a Sunday Driver package: one round at each over Sunday and Monday.

Before you book
- Book summer links rounds early. Southport & Ainsdale says many visitors book years ahead for May to September.
- Bring handicap certificates. Southport & Ainsdale, Hillside, Formby, Ormskirk and Southport Old Links all ask for one.
- Winter is far cheaper but some courses close: Hillside shuts for maintenance from 19 October to mid-March, and Royal Birkdale closes to visitors from November to February.
- Mix a links with a parkland course. Hurlston Hall and Mossock Hall are 15 minutes inland and a fraction of the price.

How much does a golf day cost in Southport, Formby & Ormskirk?

Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club (from £399), Hesketh Golf Club (from £180), Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa (from £60) are the exception.
